AVIATRIX | A NEW MUSICAL

Book and Lyrics by Angela Poe Russell

Music and Lyrics by Dionne McClain-Freeney

Directed by Amy Poisson

Seeking 8 African American/Black diaspora identifying actors-singers, and 1 White male actor-singer.

About the Show

Determined to make something of herself, a girl from rural Texas dreams of flying, in this new musical. But it’s 1917 and flight schools don’t accept women, much less one who is Black and Native. Refusing to take no for answer, Bessie Coleman charts a most unique path, making her legacy — aviation legend.

Content Advisories: Discussion and depiction of racism.

Aviatrix will begin rehearsals in Late Feb/Early March, 2026, and the show will run May 15-June 7, 2026.

Aviatrix will begin rehearsals in mid-March 2026 for non-Equity performers and late March for Equity performers, and the show will run May 15-June 7, 2026.

Who Should Audition

All actors must be age 18 or over. We are looking for actors, singers, and dancers/movers interested in being part of a Musical New Work process. The script, songs, and the role assignments for Ensemble are still in progress and are subject to change.

Rehearsals will generally be on evenings and weekends, so those with commitments during the work week are welcome and encourage to submit.

Seattle Public Theater is committed to becoming an anti-racist, anti-ableist, and anti-sexist organization and seeks to uproot and dismantle Industrial white Supremacy within the theatrical arts and our community. We strive to center the values of inclusivity and transparency in our casting process. Please visit our website to read more about our Anti-Racism commitments and feel free to reach out with questions.

How To Audition

Please prepare and submit the following to audition. Please send SELF TAPES of yourself performing the requested materials, not clips from past performances. These self tapes can be recorded on a cell phone, you do not need any special equipment or lighting. Songs can be recorded either with musical backing or acapella.

1) One short contemporary monologue (1-2 minutes)

2) A link to yourself singing between (1-2 min) of a song. You may choose any style that fits you best, including:

- Great American Songbook / Jazz

- Musical Theatre in a soulful style or R&B (absolutely welcome!)

We particularly recommend the following songs, or songs similar in style to the following: “Waiting For Life” or "Mama Will Provide" (Once on This Island) • “Home” (The Wiz) • “Where I’ve Been” (Hairspray) • “Wheels of a Dream” or “Make Them Hear You” (Ragtime) • or any soulful pop/R&B song that shows your voice and emotional connection.

3) A link to yourself performing this excerpt of "My Shot" from Hamilton.

In addition to these pieces, please answer the rest of the questions in the form, and include additional OPTIONAL materials listed if desired.

Virtual submissions will be open until November 7, 2025.

The team will watch all video submissions with the goal of creating a strong ensemble. In-person callbacks will likely be November 23 & 24, with a possible second round of callbacks the evenings of Dec 8 & 9.
