DIRECTOR CALL for the Distillery New Works Festival at Seattle Public Theater

About the project and the company

Seattle Public Theater is excited to announce a call for director applications for the upcoming Distillery New Works Festival in June 2024. The festival will include six new play readings over the weekend of June 7-9th. There is a $100 stipend for all directors to cover costs you incur while volunteering at Seattle Public Theater/Macha Theatre Works.

Interested directors should email literary@seattlepublictheater.org with director bio and resume. Applicants should be excited about new work development and comfortable actively collaborating with playwrights. We will follow-up with more information and instructions. The deadline for the final stage of the application is 1/31 at noon, so we recommend emailing your resume sooner rather than later to give yourself plenty of time to complete the final application steps before the 31st.

Note: Directors who identify as any of the following are especially encouraged to apply, as these identities complement the world represented in various of our finalist plays: Women, Non-Binary, Trans, Queer, Jewish, Black, or POC directors.

Job Description

The expectations for the director are to connect with the playwright to learn about their playwright goals, then lead a casting and rehearsal process for their play that can help the playwright accomplish those goals. Here are a few more specifics on key elements:

Step 1: Meet with playwright (virtually or in person) to discuss goals/collaboration

Step 2: Cast your play. Seattle Public will facilitate a virtual casting call and collect headshots/resumes/monologue self tapes that all Distillery directors/playwrights are welcome to use when casting. Directors are also welcome to use their own networks and methods for casting.

Step 3: Rehearse your play. Directors are expected to organize and lead 2-4 rehearsals prior to the festival. We recommend that directors focus on elevating the words of the play, rather than on extensive music-stand blocking or tech elements (note, that tech will be very limited). Rehearsals may be in person or on zoom.

Step 4: Attend the festival in June and facilitate a successful reading. All plays will be followed by a talk back with the audience. We highly encourage directors who are excited to attend other play readings and engage with the festival beyond their own reading to apply.
