AN EXCITING NEW CHAPTER BEGINS AT SEATTLE PUBLIC THEATER

ANNIE LAREAU BECOMES SOLE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Seattle, WA  – Following a groundbreaking 2018-2019 season Confronting America and 6 wins at last year’s Gregory Awards, including Theatre of the Year, Seattle Public Theater announced today that Annie Lareau will become the theater’s sole Artistic Director effective September 4th, 2019. Kelly Kitchens, who for the past three years has served as Co-Artistic Director with Lareau, made the decision to move on from Seattle Public Theater after 7 years to accept and pursue other local and national artistic opportunities.

Lareau, a professional director, actor, adaptor and teaching artist, is ecstatic to propel the company into its marquee 2019/2020 season, which she and Kitchens co-curated.  Lareau has recently directed a critically acclaimed remount of her adaptation of Willa Cather’s My Antonia for Book-It Repertory Theater as well as preparing to direct The Tempest as the season opener for Seattle Shakespeare Company while also serving as Seattle Public’s Co-Artistic Director.  Along with the staff and board, she is looking forward to authoring Seattle Public Theater’s next chapter as a crucial part of Seattle’s art scene and ushering in its bright future.  She earned her B.F.A in Acting and Directing from Syracuse University and her M.Ed in Arts Education from Harvard University.

Kitchens is a two-time recipient of the Gregory Award for Outstanding Director, a member of the Actor's Equity Association and the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society, and a Guest Lecturer in Acting and Directing at the University of Washington.  She’s excited to remain an important part of the Seattle Public community, including returning this fall to direct The Thanksgiving Play by Larissa Fasthorse, which opens on October 18, 2019.  “Kelly’s contributions to the long history of Seattle Public Theater are immeasurable. She helped to elevate us to a place where the art truly is the center of our focus.  We are excited to see what she does next, support her indefinitely, and look forward to collaborating this season,” said Lareau.

“We’ve been extraordinarily fortunate to have both Annie Lareau and Kelly Kitchens as our Co-Artistic Directors for the last three years,” said board president Sol Villarreal. “We’re excited for all of the opportunities that this role has unlocked for Kelly, and we could not be more thrilled that Annie will be leading us forward into the next phase of our history.”
