CURRENT and RECENT PROGRAMS

In co-operation with Theater of Possibility:

Theater of Possibility
with Lauren Goldman Marshall
& Karen Noble Newman

TOP is an acting/improv class for 6th-8th graders with unique personalities. It is especially geared towards youth with Asperger’s, ADHD, NVLD and other social skill challenges. Youngsters without a diagnosis who have a flair for the dramatic or who are intrigued by acting will also fit right in.

*TOP helps youth navigate the intensely social world of middle school. Through fun and zany theater games, improv exercises, and role playing we will explore the dynamics of friendship and practice responses to teasing, exclusion, and bullying. Group members will have opportunities to experiment with non-verbal communication, to learn about social nuances, to understand another's perspective, and to practice flexibility all while having fun and expressing their authentic selves loudly and creatively.

*Facilitated by Lauren Goldman Marshall, MFA, theater teaching artist & playwright and Karen Noble-Newman, MA, licensed mental health counselor

*Small group size: 6-10 kids

Location: Billings Middle School in Greenlake area

Here's what some of our partners, audiences and parents are saying about our outreach program:

Last night their eyes were shining – they were so excited about this EVENT in their lives – this could be one of those memories that they have forever.  As soon as the show was over, there were high fives and yells of “WE DID IT!!” These plays build camaraderie, a sense of responsibility, and creates an environment where pushing through fear has awesome results.  What an accomplishment!!

The first theater production involving our own 4th and 5th actors and Seattle Public Theater has been a HUGE success. Watching Friday night's performance was truly amazing- it made me laugh and cry tears of joy. Your dedication and volunteer efforts paid off in making this a fabulous experience for your children and all who got to enjoy the shows.

Everyone I've spoken with who was able to see it were blown away with how great the acting was along with the beautiful sets. Also, parents of the actors expressed how wonderful SPT's director, Carmel Baird, was with their children. She and Mike were able to empower the kids to believe in themselves and reach for the stars! I've even had a few people ask if we can do it again in the spring. That is saying so much considering how much work you all did to make this show possible.

It truly was a community building event.

Besides how fabulous this was for the kids in the show – I really liked how excited everyone else was about it too! The kids in the audience were having so much fun watching their friends perform.
