This new play is by the author of Spinning Into Butter,
known for contemporary stories of urban life and the intersection
of gender, politics and morality.
After a disastrous gallery showing, artist Dana Fielding attempts suicide, and lands in a mental ward. But when she learns her health insurance will only pay for a 10-day stay, Dana cooks up a scheme with two fellow patients to fool the doctors into believing she's psychotic. Without knowing much about him, she takes on the personality of troubled baseball star Darryl Strawberry. Known for having the 'sweetest swing in baseball,' Strawberry also struggled with the darker side of rejection by fans and the effort to make a comeback.
With hilarious dialogue and rich characters, Gilman takes on the state of health insurance, the legacy of fame, and ways in which we recraft our identity.
Directed by Seattle Public Theater Artistic Director Shana Bestock, featuring Heather Hawkins, Karen Nelsen, Trick Dannecker, Gavin Cummins, and Kelly Kitchens.
The Sweetest Swing in Baseball plays at ArtsWest February 20 to March 15, then opens at the Bathhouse Theater March 21 and runs until April 13.
Special Treat! On Sunday, March 30 after the 2 PM Matinee there will be a post-play discussion with the cast and the Artistic Director, Shana Bestock. Come talk to the cast and see what they have brought to the stadium!
